About Us

The Yellowave journey

Yellowave Beach Sports Venue opened in March 2007. It was set up by Katie, her husband Spencer and her dad Alan. As a beach volleyball player Katie was determined to re-create the beach lifestyle she’d experienced after living in Huntington Beach, California and Manly Beach, Australia. Katie, Spencer and Alan set up Yellowave Ltd in 2002. It took 5 years to develop from the first meeting to opening the doors in 2007. It’s the first centre of its kind in the UK with a dedicated team passionate about beach volleyball and sand based sports.

In 2023 Yellowave was selected by Volleyball England as a national centre for beach volleyball development.

Environment
Silver winners of the ethical, responsible & sustainable Tourism SE Awards, Yellowave has taken action to reduce its impact on the environment. The venue is carbon neutral. Yellowave has solar panels and uses 100% renewable energy. We have ditched all single use take away cups. All waste at Yellowave goes into the circular economy.
  • Yellowave paper 100% recycled in France to create 100% recycled paper.
  • Yellowave general waste sent to a biomass factory and turned into energy that feeds electricity in Worthing and Brighton.
  • Yellowave card recycled in Kent and made into cardboard boxes for the likes of Amazon parcels.
  • Yellowave plastic 100% recycled and re-used in plastic items including things like fleeces.
  • Yellowave organic coffee granules turned into coffee logs which we can use to heat the pizza oven.
  • Yellowave food waste is collected into special small waste bins. Using a Bio-gen process it gets turned into fertiliser and scattered onto farmland to help grow stuff.
  • Yellowave glass gets taken to Tilbury Docks in London and sorted by lasers and recycled back into glass bottles.

Philosophy

The Yellowave philosophy is reflected in everything we do. We bring the surf culture to sand, offering an alternative active beach lifestyle. We believe our actions should have an onward positive effect. Respecting others and respecting the environment is key to how we operate. Yellowave is all about getting out there and having a go – getting sandy and having fun. We create a total beach sports experience, open to all, that we hope you wish to try.

Community

Yellowave provides every state school in Brighton and Hove ten hours free use of the beach volleyball courts in the winter season.  The team work with local primary and secondary schools delivering beach volleyball and beach environment days. Yellowave sponsors a number of local youth grass roots teams as well as Brighton & Hove Schools District Girls football team.

Charity

Yellowave supports ‘Girls in Sport’, a charity who help girls at risk in some of the world’s most hard to reach settings, so they have equal access to sport and safe spaces.  Girls in Sport began at the end of the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, West Africa, against the backdrop of social fragmentation, and the devastating impacts of civil war. They provide vital nutritional needs, structured coaching and school sponsorship, helping to close the gender gap and improve the life chances in places where poverty and gender-based violence are daily threat’.
